This poster was presented as original research data on MIBD or Mastocytic Inflammatory Bowel DIsease, a broader spectrum of the newly recognized disorder known as mastocytic enterolitis. This is, as far as we know, the largest series of such patients and highlights several hereto not known or recognized features such as the increase prevalence of the Celiac risk gene patterns HLA DQ2 and DQ8, associations of markers of gut permeabilty (leaky gut) seen in patient with Crohn's disease and Celiac, and the high response rate to gluten free diet. Below is microscopic appearance of increased mast cells in intestinal biopsies.
Mast cells show up in increased numbers when tryptase immunohistochemistry stain performed on otherwise normal intestinal tissue. The mast cells stain brownish and number more than 20 per high power field.
This is the abstract published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology that summarizes the clinical data from the first 200 patients I diagnosed with Mastocytic Enterocolitis or as I prefer Mastocytic Inflammatory Bowel Disease (MIBD).
