What are ostomies (colostomy, ileostomy, gastrostomy)?

What is the difference between colostomy and ileostomy?

An ostomy is a non-natural opening created with one of the tubular structures of the body. A colostomy is created when a portion of the colon is brought from inside the abdominal cavity out through an opening in the skin, creating a stoma or new opening. An ileostomy is created the last portion of the small intestine or ileum is brought out as an opening through the skin. The stomas created from the ileum and colon are usually covered with a collection bag that can be emptied as needed.

What is a gastrostomy and jejunostomy?

A gastrostomy is created when an opening to the stomach is created through the skin, usually to permit feedings to be administered directly into the stomach, bypassing the need to swallow. Sometimes the gastrostomy is also used to remove stomach fluid especially when there is a blockage of the stomach. A jejunostomy is opening through the skin directly entering the mid-portion of the small intestine called the jejunum. It is used to provide liquid nutrition beyond the stomach and first part of the small bowel or duodenum, usually when there has been surgical removal or bypass of those parts of the GI tract because of obstruction.
